MBA in Human Resource Management

Program Overview

Welcome to the world of Human resource management.

If you're hoping to advance in the human resources field, pursuing a master's degree is a great way to build the skills and knowledge needed to take the next step in your career.

No organization can get very far without consideration for its human capital. In an age of automation, this may seem counterintuitive. But even the most highly automated workplaces will fail without the proper support and inputs of their human workers. Just as MBAs are some of the most trusted graduate degree programs within large organizations, so too are those with human resources specializations. Human resources professionals can rise to upper management, and many CEO’s even come from a human resources background. Whether you’re looking to get your foot in the door as a human resources specialist, or looking to advance beyond the program level, MBAs are one of the most commonly held and well-vetted graduate degrees for business professionals across different roles.

EBC’s Master’s in Business Administration degrees primarily cater to non-traditional and adult students. EBC also tends to be forward thinking compared to other degree types. Many students love online degrees as they enable them not to have to move, quit jobs, or commute to class. Notably, an MBA in Human Resource Management is perfect for individuals with good communication skills and an ability to envision a larger picture for an organization. At present, skilled HR Professionals are required in all public and private sector organizations.

Individuals with a Human Resources degree are usually employed as Human Resource Managers, Employee Relations Managers, and in other similar roles.

You will examine key points such as:

  1. The basics of HR Management, including orientation, compensation, and benefits
  2. Understanding job analysis
  3. Planning training
  4. Legally defensible terminations, and more.
  5. Identify the stages of team development and ways to help teams through each stage
  6. Use common process tools to make meetings easier and more productive
  7. Performance Appraisals
  8. Evaluation
  9. Employee Dispute Resolution
  10. Talent Management
  11. Employee Accountability
  12. Team Building

Upon completion of the MBA in Human Resource Management, learners will be able to:

  • Help you to recognize the importance of having a performance review process for employees; how to work with employees to set performance standards and goals; skills in observing, giving feedback, listening, and asking questions; an effective interview process and the opportunity to practice the process in a supportive atmosphere; how to make the performance review legally defensible; and much more.
  • Enable learners to comprehend how to manage for optimum performance, contribute to motivating work environments, to understand the role of goal setting in performance management, use ideal tools to help employees set and achieve goals, apply a three-phase model that will help prepare employees for peak performance, activate their inner motivation, and evaluate their skills.
  • learn: employee dispute resolution; meditation skills; what an effective peer review consists of; how to select a facilitator or panel, and what responsibilities are allocated to each; sophisticated communication skills, including questioning and probing techniques; and the valuable particulars of the hearing process, from inception to decision.
  • Learn what is required to manage high potential employees, how to apply multifaceted aspects of talent management in their organizations, to recognize and foster talent, and to explain the principles of competency-based management.
  • Understand and apply: what accountability is and what events in history have shaped our view of it; the requirements for personal and corporate accountability; the cycle of accountability and the fundamental elements required to build an accountable organization; and the skills required for accountability, including goal-setting, giving and receiving feedback, and delegation.
  • Learn to: develop and enforce team norms and ground rules; generate and approach contracts; identify their own unique style and represent that in their team dynamic; leverage their knowledge to grow and lead effectively; build trust and develop the team’s maturity as a unit; and communicate with presence and impact.

Career

HR specialists with an MBA position themselves for managerial and leadership careers in medium- to large-sized organizations. Executives with an MBA in HR work at companies across industries as an integral part of management. They work in a range of positions, including as HR generalists who plan and oversee administrative functions such as the hiring and recruiting of staff, and specialists who plan and execute an organization's training and development initiatives. While a bachelor's degree and some years of experience suffice for many senior HR positions, strong competition necessitates a master's degree for other positions.

Generally, HR professionals pursuing a master's degree fall into two categories. The first are students who have a deep interest in human resources, and want to focus their education on this field exclusively. These students see themselves spending their careers in human resource management, and want to become true experts in the field. For them, a master's in human relations is the best choice - this degree is designed give students a deep immersion into the field of HR, and will help those with a passion for human resources take the necessary steps to become experienced, highly educated leaders in the industry. These programs build on core human resource concepts in highly-focused classes that will take students' understanding of the field to the next level.

The second group are students who have a background in human resources, and an interest in furthering their knowledge in the field, but want to diversify their skillsets, become more marketable, or explore a wider range of interests. In those cases, pursuing an MBA with an HR concentration may make sense. These programs will include many of the same core courses as a human resources master's degree program, but will also focus heavily on the concepts and skills integral to a business degree. If your goal is to become a well-rounded business person with a unique human resources perspective, an MBA in human resource management is an excellent choice.
